Workshop: Film Editing

How can an ordinary scene seem disturbing, dreamlike, or completely different from what we would expect? David Lynch's world shows us that films don't always have to tell a story in a linear and rational way—often it's more about atmosphere, feeling, and unexpected combinations of images and sound. We will focus on precisely these techniques during the editing workshop. We will familiarize ourselves with David Lynch's work and then try our hand at editing in DaVinci Resolve in groups. With the help of editing composition, we will create a short experimental scene with the aim of evoking an unexpected feeling or atmosphere.

The workshop will be led by Juraj Ondruš.

As a film editor and editing supervisor, Juraj has participated in many student, animated, and documentary films. The animated film Mom Is Always Right was nominated for the Golden Slipper Award at the Zlín Film Festival in 2022. Short film Čerešne also received a special mention at the Zlín Film Festival (2020). The documentary film Niečo naviac won the audience award at the Sun in the Net Awards (2019). For more than seven years, he has been working as the chief editor at the audiovisual production company Bumerang Film. In addition to creating advertising formats (CZC.cz, Sportisimo, etc.), he teaches the basics of editing at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín as an external lecturer and has ambitions to move forward not only in a practical but also in an academic direction. He is the co-author of the Filmana project, where he is responsible for communication with Slovakia, as well as processing video materials and consulting on dramaturgy.
