Data and Impressions? Introducing a European Perspective on Young Audiences and Film Education

On September 17, Audiovisual HUB Prague presented qualitative pan-European research on young audiences from the Kids Regio project, research on viewing habits from the Swedish Film Institute, and the inspiring Filmhub project from the Netherlands at Kino Kavalírka in Prague. The findings of foreign experts will be followed up by the program of the International Industry Forum of the BOO International Film Festival, which will take place on November 7 at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art.
Anne Schultka, Kids Regio
The first guest was Anne Schultka with her research Keeping up with Children as an Audience. The study provided valuable insights into how children aged 7–11 perceived and watched films. It showed, for example, that for them, watching a film was primarily a shared experience with their family and that their preferences were determined more by age than by nationality or gender. Twelve countries participated in this pan-European research, and 25 representatives from across Europe were involved in disseminating the results. The Czech Republic was represented by our colleague Radka Hoffman (head of the industry department at BOO IFF and international relations at KRUTÓN LAB, member of the ECFA board), and the results were presented by Anne Schultka from the KIDS Regio organization.

Malin Nygren, Swedish Film Institute
The second guest was Malin Nygren, former head of the Children and Youth Department at the Swedish Film Institute. In her presentation, she shared the results of the institute's research on the film habits of young people aged 16–19 and outlined their preferences and viewing behavior. These findings served as a basis for the creation of more targeted educational content and strategies for engaging young audiences.

The third guest was Eveline van Stuijvenberg, head of Filmhub Zuid-Holland, based in The Hague. She presented the functioning of their Filmhub and explained how it cooperated with other organizations and teachers in the region and at the national level. Her presentation was an important source of inspiration for the development of the Czech network of Audiovisual Hubs, which were also inspired by experiences from the Netherlands.
